Psychology

Arrive safely in the present moment and your body.

Are you living with pain, fatigue, or emotional patterns—like constant worry, shutdown, or reactivity—that are slowly making your world feel smaller?

Perhaps your body feels unpredictable, or your mind is crowded with thoughts you can’t switch off. Maybe you’re caught in cycles—of stress, overthinking, tension, or disconnection from others.

You’ve been searching for someone who doesn’t put you in the too-hard basket—someone who sees you as the whole, wonderful human that you are.

At Zebras, we understand how difficult it can be to find practitioners who truly get what it means to live with a rare or chronic condition. You deserve care that meets you where you are, and works with your mindbody—not against it.

"Psychology isn't for someone like me."

Maybe you’ve learned to carry a lot on your own. Maybe you’ve been told—directly or not—that your struggles aren’t serious enough, or that you should’ve figured it out by now.

But psychology at Zebras isn’t about fixing you. It’s about offering a space that gently holds all the parts of you—especially the ones that feel messy, uncertain, or too much. Over time, it’s a place where shame can soften, self-compassion can grow, and where you can begin to trust your own rhythms and needs.

Imagine having the freedom to focus on what matters most to you.

Picture yourself going about your day with confidence, supported by care thoughtfully tailored to your unique needs.

At Zebras Australia, our team work with you to expand your capacity and move towards a life that feels bigger, fuller, and brighter.

Who are we?
We are a trailblazing team of healthcare workers here to put an end to less-than-positive experiences for those living with rare chronic conditions. Our psychologists bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and empathy, working closely with you to enhance your wellbeing.

We’ve supported thousands of people on their journey, and we would be honoured to do the same for you.

What is psychology?
Psychology is the study of the human mind and behaviour. At Zebras, our psychologists support people to explore thoughts, feelings, and patterns that may be causing distress or impacting daily life. This might involve working through past experiences, navigating change, or learning new ways to relate to yourself and others. We take a trauma-informed and neuro-affirming approach to care—grounded in safety, compassion, and curiosity.

Co-created by you and your psychologist, our care plans are designed to:

  • Support you to explore patterns of thought, emotion, and behaviour that may be keeping you stuck
  • Offer practical tools for managing overwhelm, anxiety, and shutdown in daily life
  • Build self-awareness, self-compassion, and trust in your capacity to care for yourself
  • Develop personalised strategies for boundaries, communication, and lifestyle adjustments
  • Help process past experiences safely using evidence-based therapies

At Zebras, psychology is more than talk therapy—it’s a relational, collaborative process grounded in curiosity, safety, and deep respect for your lived experience. Our psychologists work with you to understand the whole of who you are, gently tending to the places in your life that feel heavy, stuck, or tender. Whether you’re navigating emotional patterns, past trauma, or the invisible load of chronic illness, we’re here to help you feel more at home in yourself.

Psychology can support:

  • Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression other mood-related challenges
  • Emotional overwhelm or distress following life events like relationship breakdowns, job loss, or health crises
  • Ongoing stress and burnout from work, caregiving, or navigating complex systems
  • Behavioural patterns such as procrastination, addiction, people-pleasing or emotional outbursts
  • Relationship difficulties—whether with family, partners, friends or colleagues—including challenges with communication and trust
  • Grief and loss, whether recent or long-standing, and the emotional impact of major life transitions
  • Personal growth and self-awareness—deepening your understanding of your emotions, beliefs and behaviours
  • Identity exploration, including neurodivergence and the process of receiving a late diagnosis
  • Coping with trauma, both recent and historic, through evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, schema therapy, ACT, DBT and trauma-informed CBT
  • The emotional toll of living with a chronic condition, including the burden of feeling misunderstood or unsupported

While we’re trained in assessment and diagnosis, our focus is always on understanding your story in its full context—honouring your needs, your capacity, and the direction you want to grow.

  • Building your toolkit… Depending on your goals and preferences, we may explore practices like breathing, mindfulness, or guided imagery to support emotional regulation and nervous system balance—always at a pace that feels safe for you.

  • Learning together… You’ll be invited to deepen your understanding of the patterns that shape your experience—like the stress response, emotional cycles, trauma impacts, or relational dynamics—and develop insight that supports lasting change.

If you're unsure whether psychology is right for you, you're welcome to reach out. We're here to offer a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your experience and work alongside you in whatever comes next.

Can your psychologist diagnose my condition?

Can your psychologist diagnose my condition?

Our psychologist does not currently offer formal diagnostic assessments or written reports for conditions such as ADHD, autism, or other forms of neurodivergence. While diagnosis may be gently explored as part of the therapeutic process, the focus of our psychology service is on understanding your experience and supporting meaningful change through evidence-based interventions.

If a formal diagnosis is something you're seeking, we’re happy to help connect you with trusted providers who can offer that assessment and reporting service.

What approaches is your psychologist trained in?

What approaches is your psychologist trained in?

Our psychologist is trained in a variety of evidence-based therapeutic modalities. These approaches are not used in isolation or as rigid, step-by-step programs—instead, they’re thoughtfully woven into your sessions based on what feels most relevant, supportive, and accessible for you. Together, you will explore what’s coming up and collaboratively decide on an approach that fits your goals and pace.

Some of the modalities our psychologist draws from include:

  • Schema Therapy: A relational and experiential form of therapy that helps you identify and shift deep-seated patterns (or “schemas”) that may be shaping how you think, feel, and respond in your life and relationships.
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing): A structured therapy often used to support healing from trauma or distressing experiences by processing memories through bilateral stimulation.
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): A practical, skills-based therapy that supports emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and more fulfilling interpersonal relationships.
  • Trauma-informed CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy): A structured, collaborative approach that supports you to notice and shift unhelpful thoughts and behaviours while being mindful of trauma history and nervous system sensitivity.
  • Trauma-informed ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): A values-based therapy that helps you make space for your thoughts and feelings while taking meaningful steps toward a life that feels aligned and fulfilling.
  • Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT): A relational therapy focused on deepening your capacity to understand your own and others’ thoughts, emotions, and intentions—supporting emotional regulation and healthier connections.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): A compassionate, parts-based approach that supports you to understand and work with the different “parts” of yourself with curiosity, care, and self-leadership.

Each of these modalities can be adapted to suit your unique needs—and our psychologist's role is to help guide, support, and collaborate with you in choosing what feels safe, useful, and meaningful along the way.

What can I expect in my first consultation?

What can I expect in my first consultation?

Your first  consultation - consisting of 50 minutes face-to-face time with your psychologist - is all about beginning to build a safe and trusting connection.

Your psychologist will spend time getting to know you—not just your challenges, but your story, your supports, and your hopes for care. This initial session is in-depth and often unfolds over a few appointments to ensure we’re not rushing the process.

Together, you’ll explore what’s been happening in your life, how it’s affecting you, and what feels most important to focus on. Your psychologist may offer some reflective questions or ask you to complete assessments between sessions to help create a fuller picture of your experience.

With your consent, they’ll also collaborate with your care team—both within Zebras and externally—so your mindbody support feels connected and cohesive.

Above all, this is a space where all of you is welcome. Your psychologist will take a trauma-informed and neuro-affirming approach, prioritising deep listening and making space for all parts of you, just as you are—wherever you are in your journey.

What happens if I feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed in a session?

What happens if I feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed in a session?

That’s okay—and it’s more common than you might think. Therapy can bring up big feelings, especially when you're exploring tender parts of your story. If something doesn’t feel right, your psychologist will slow things down, check in with you, and adjust the pace or approach.

Your safety matters, and you’re always encouraged to share how you’re feeling. This is your space, and you get to go at a pace that feels manageable for you.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

Without one, you’re still very welcome to access support as a private client or through private health insurance (depending on your cover).
