The healing properties of movement

movement is medicine

At Zebras Australia, we are especially passionate about the healing properties of movement. We believe that humans are designed to move, and that there are safe and enjoyable options for every body.

Our individual and group movement sessions are designed and guided by experienced physiotherapists with post-graduate qualifications in Pilates, yoga, Feldenkrais, strength and conditioning and other somatic practices.

Our studio is warm and inviting, with a range of equipment to meet you where you’re at including Pilates, strength and conditioning, cardiovascular…. and an aerial silk!

Our intention is to integrate our knowledge and experience to bring you an intuitive, intelligent and invitational approach to ultimately create the conditions for a positive experience of body and movement.

how do I get started?

Our intake process involves an initial 45 minute consultation booked with the physiotherapist most closely aligned to your needs.

Your first session is likely to involve a combination of:

  • History-taking
  • A thorough assessment of your body (and may include postural alignment, range of movement, strength, balance and control)
  • Goal setting
  • And in most cases… movement!

Based on your movement background, current capacity and aspirations, you and your physiotherapist will co-create an inspiring program to get you moving.

In thoughtfully paced individual sessions (of 30 or 45 minute duration), your physiotherapist will closely supervise and facilitate as you learn the ropes, including the setup of any equipment, breath, movement choreography, dosage as well as any specific modifications.

From here you may choose to continue individual sessions or consider joining a group class once you and your physiotherapist feel you’re ready. Repetition is integral to learning so we recommend a minimum of four individual sessions before entering our group classes.

group classes

Beyond your individual sessions, we invite you to experience our suite of supervised group movement classes. Based on the distinct electrical patterns detectable in the brain, our group classes are organised according to the amplitude and frequency of brainwaves.

beta

Beta brainwaves are associated with decision-making, problem-solving and learning. As for the alert state of beta, this small group class is inspired by modern physiotherapy, strength and conditioning and Pilates and invites a maximum of three participants to move through individually designed programs over 50 minutes. Beta will meet you where you are at, providing participants with endless opportunities to develop kinaesthetic literacy and physical conditioning with high levels of oversight.

alpha

When we think of alpha brain waves, we think of a state of total relaxation. Ergo, alpha and yoga are a natural fit. This small group class is inspired by the traditional lineage of hatha yoga class and invites a maximum of eight participants to move through a pre-choreographed sequence over 50 minutes. You can expect an intuitive mix of movement and stillness, an invitation to explore and play with unstructured movement, sprinklings of yogic philosophy, intelligent sequencing as well as breath and meditation to complete your experience. Alpha like yoga is about the work in, and less about the work out.

theta

Daydreaming and reduced states of consciousness are associated with theta brain waves. In this small group class inspired by yin yoga, up to twelve participants will move through a pre-choreographed class over 55 minutes. This largely floor-based class incorporates the use of props for support and aims to create opportunities for stillness and introspection which can give rise to insight and creativity.

delta

Our deepest state of rest and rejuvenation is marked by the presence of delta brain waves. Yoga nidra, or yogic sleep, is an ancient practice that allows us to access this state. This group class invites a maximum of twelve participants to move through a pre-choreographed class over 55 minutes. You can expect a floor-based practice that is more similar to a guided meditation that will leave you feeling replenished and whole.

All classes are considered with our community in mind. We believe that movement is our birthright and to ensure an inclusive experience our team is highly trained and prepared to offer modifications wherever required.

We would also like to honour the many teachers before us who have influenced and shaped our offerings and we do so with a great reverence for their traditional lineages.
